Controversial star Ke$ha pulled out of a concert in Malaysia, not because she didn’t want to perform there but because the Malaysian government threatened her with imprisonment for bringing her sexed up image there.
Event organizer Livescape posted the following on Facebook, “We have done everything in our power to appeal against this decision. Unfortunately, despite efforts that were made down to the wire, including just minutes ago, we are distraught to confirm that the show will be cancelled.”
Ke$ha took to Twitter to explain to fans the legal situation clouding her Malaysian performance.
”To be clear. I did NOT cancel. I was not allowed to play. And then I was going
to play anyways and was threatened with imprisonment.”
Promoters promised to curtail the show to fit Malaysian standards which require female performers to be covered from their chest to knees but opposition caused the performance ultimately to be canceled.
Ke$ha isn’t the first to face the strong arm of the Malaysian government. In 2006 a PussyCat Dolls performance ended in the promoters being fined. In 2007, protests were held against Gwen Stefani saying her raunchy outfits would corrupt the youth. Once Beyoncé got whiff of this she pulled out of a show a few weeks later. Last month US metal band Lamb of God was barred from performing in the strictly conservative Muslim country calling their work blasphemous.
